# Configure VIP settings

> How to set up VIP tier milestone rules in Smile Admin.

Choose how customers progress through VIP tiers by configuring milestone types, timeframes, and start dates.

## Configure VIP settings

1. In Smile Admin, go to **Program**, then select **[VIP](https://app.smile.io/reward-programs/vip).**
2. In the **Tier settings** section, click **Edit.**
3. Select your **program start date.**
   * The earliest start date is the date you installed Smile.
   * You cannot select a future date.
4. Choose how customers enter tiers:
   * **Points earned,** or
   * **Amount spent**
5. Choose your timeframe:
   * **Lifetime**, or
   * **Calendar year**
6. Click **Save.**

## Updating VIP program settings

You can configure these settings before activating your VIP program.

To update them after activation:

1. Deactivate your VIP program
2. Make your changes
3. Reactivate your VIP program

When you reactivate the program, customer tier placements are recalculated based on the new settings.
