How to choose and set up different on-site customer reminders or Nudges

Introduction

Nudges are powerful, on-site reminders that encourage customers to engage with your program in the moments they’re most likely to. Adding nudges to your site is an easy way to add new members to your community and increase reward redemption.

This feature is only available for Shopify and BigCommerce merchants

Overview


Types of nudges available

There are several different nudge types that you can add to your program in Smile Admin:

Here’s a quick overview of what each nudge is, how to customize a nudge, when it’s shown, what your customers will see and why it matters.

✅ This feature is available on the Starter plan and up

Account creation

What it is: The account creation nudge helps you turn site visitors into new program members by keeping your program top of mind for first-time shoppers.

How to customize: Navigate to the Nudges section in app and click on the option titled "Increase account creation". Next, you will be able to see the option to choose an icon option, or upload your own icon that represents your brand identity. You can also edit the title text to give your nudge more personality.



When it’s shown: The first time a new shopper visits your site, on the first page they visit.

Why it’s important: There’s power in numbers. Your community will only be successful if you have members you can reward. Making it easier for new site visitors to discover your program will help you add members, strengthening your community.

📋 Note: The Account Creation nudge will only show up once for each new visitor. However, if the user changed browsers / computers, or used incognito or private browsing then it will show up again.

Points spending

What it is: The points spending nudge reminds your program members that they’ve earned points that could be used towards their purchase.

How to customize: Navigate to the Nudges section in app and click on the option titled "Increase points spending". Next, you will be able to see the option to choose an icon option, or upload your own icon that represents your brand identity. You can also edit the title, description and button text to give your nudge more personality.



When it’s shown: When a program member is logged in on your cart page and has enough points to purchase a reward.

Why it’s important: Making it easier for customers to use their points when they’re considering a purchase will help you boost engagement with your program. When customers have used a reward towards their purchase they’ll be more likely to return to make another purchase.

📝 Pro Tip: If you’ve branded your points currency, your points spending nudge will adopt your currency name to keep your program experience consistent.

Reward usage

What it is: The reward usage Nudge reminds your program members they’ve earned a reward recently that could be used towards their purchase.

How to customize: Navigate to the Nudges section in app and click on the option titled "Increase reward usage". Next, you will be able to see the option to choose an icon, or upload your own icon that represents your brand identity. You can also edit the title, description and button text to give your nudge more personality.

When it’s shown: When a program member is logged in on your cart page and has a reward they could use towards their purchase.

Why it’s important: Making it easier for customers to use their rewards when they’re considering a purchase will help them get more out of your program. When they can see tangible value they get as part of your community, they’ll be more likely to make another purchase.

Referral sharing

✅ Only available to Shopify merchants

What it is: The referral sharing Nudge reminds your program members they could earn a reward for referring their friends.

How to customize: Navigate to the Nudges section in app and click on the option titled "Increase referral URL sharing". Next, you will be able to see the option to choose an icon, or upload your own icon that represents your brand identity. You can also edit the title, description and button text to give your nudge more personality.

When it’s shown: When a program member is logged in on your thank you page, after they’ve placed an order.

Why it’s important: Existing program members that already know, love, and purchase from your brand are your secret weapon when it comes to growing your community. Offering them a reward for referring their friends and family to your site is a great way to get your brand in front of new customers.

Guest referral sharing

✅ Only available for Shopify merchants who allow Guest participation

What it is: The guest referral sharing Nudge shares the referral URL of your customers without accounts and lets them know that they can earn a reward for referring their friends to your store.

How to customize: Navigate to the Nudges section in app and click on the option titled "Increase guest referral URL sharing". Next, you will be able to see the option to choose an icon, or upload your own icon that represents your brand identity. You can also edit the title and description text to give your nudge more personality.

When it’s shown: When a guest (customer without an account) places an order, on the thank you page and the order confirmation page.

Why it’s important: For customers without accounts - this is an easy way of letting them know about the referral program and surfacing their referral URL to them.

📝 Pro Tip: Nudges will adopt your Smile UI color, theme, icons, shapes, and placement settings from your Display to offer a consistent experience for your program members.

How to enable or disable a Nudge

You will need to enable a Nudge before it will appear on your site.

In the Smile admin, go to Nudges , then select the Nudge you’d like to add and then click Enable near the bottom of the page. The message and action that your customers will see are shown in the preview area on the right.

To disable a Nudge, Select the Nudge you’d like to remove and then click Disable near the bottom of the page.

📋 Notes:

  • You will need to have a cart page in order to use our points spending or reward usage Nudge. If you use a cart slider, these nudges will not appear

  • If you have both the reward usage and points spending nudge enabled and a customer meets criteria for both nudges, only the reward usage nudge will be shown

  • Gift card, store credit and variable rewards will not appear in a Nudge
