# Customize referral social sharing

> Select which social channels customers can use to share their referral link, and customize the message that's shared.

Customers can share their referral link directly from the Smile panel using supported social channels. You can control which platforms are available for direct sharing and customize the content that appears with their referral link.

## Customize referral social settings

Through the Smile panel, customers can share their referral link directly on social media. You can select which social channels appear as sharing options and customize the message using text and variables.

To edit the referral social settings:

1. From Smile Admin, navigate to **Program** > [**Referrals**](https://app.smile.io/reward-programs/referrals).
2. In the **Social sharing** section, navigate to the **Social settings** card.
3. Click **Edit**.
4. Update the social channels or message content you'd like to modify.
5. Click **Save**.

  **Note:** Facebook does not allow apps to set a custom message. When a customer refers via Facebook, they will be prompted to write their own message.

## Referral sharing on mobile devices

On mobile devices, Smile replaces the individual referral sharing buttons with a single **Share** button. When tapped, it opens the device’s native share sheet so customers can share through supported social, messaging, and email apps installed on their device, including Facebook, X, WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger, email, and more.\

The pre-filled message uses the following format:\
*"Here's a \[friend reward name] for your first order at \[store name]. To accept, use my referral link: \[referral URL]"*\

The friend reward name and store name are pulled automatically from your referral program settings. The message structure itself cannot be customized in Smile. However, customers can edit the message before sending it through their selected app.

## Customize referral link preview

You can customize how your website appears when a referral link is shared by defining your store's referral metadata within Smile Admin.

To edit the image and description shown with referral links:

1. From Smile Admin, navigate to **Program** > [**Referrals**](https://app.smile.io/reward-programs/referrals).
2. In the **Social sharing** section, navigate to the **Customize referral link preview** card.
3. Click **Edit**.
4. Click **Customize card message and display.**
5. Enter your preferred **Title**, **Description,** and **Image**.
6. Click **Save**.

  **Tip:** Use **Referral variables** to personalize your message. These variables are available in the **Social settings** card.
