# Configure VIP tiers

> Learn how to add VIP tiers during setup or after your VIP program is active.

VIP tiers let you reward your most loyal customers and encourage repeat purchases over time.

You can add tiers while setting up your VIP program for the first time, or later after your program is already active. The steps are similar, but active programs must be temporarily deactivated before some changes can be made.

## Configure VIP tiers during initial setup

When setting up your VIP program for the first time, you can add tiers before enabling the program.

1. In your Smile admin, go to **Program > [VIP](https://app.smile.io/reward-programs/vip)**.
2. In the **VIP tiers** section, click **Add tier**.
3. Enter the following:
   * Tier name
   * Milestone requirement
4. Click **Save**.
5. After saving, additional tier settings will become available. Configure the following:
   * Tier icon
   * Entry rewards
   * Perks
6. Click **Save** again.
7. Repeat these steps to add additional tiers.
8. When you're finished, return to your VIP dashboard to **Activate** your VIP program.

  **Note:** You need at least two VIP tiers before you can activate your VIP program.

## Add a VIP tier to an active program

If your VIP program is already active, it must be temporarily deactivated before you can add a new tier.

1. In your Smile admin, go to **Program > [VIP](https://app.smile.io/reward-programs/vip)**.
2. In the **VIP tiers** section, click **Add tier**.
3. A banner will appear prompting you to deactivate your program before continuing. Click **Deactivate program**.
4. Enter the following:
   * Tier name
   * Milestone requirement
5. Click **Save**.
6. After saving, additional tier settings will become available. Configure the following:
   * Tier icon
   * Entry rewards
   * Perks
7. Click **Save** again.
8. Return to your VIP dashboard and click **Activate** your VIP program.

## Customize a VIP tier

After creating a tier, you can edit its settings at any time.

1. In your Smile admin, go to **Program > [VIP](https://app.smile.io/reward-programs/vip)**.
2. In the **VIP tiers** section, select the tier you want to update.
3. Update your tier settings.
4. Click **Save** to apply your changes.

The following settings can be updated while your VIP program is active:

* Tier icon
* Entry rewards
* Perks

The following settings require your VIP program to be temporarily deactivated before changes can be made:

* Tier name
* Milestone requirement

## Delete a VIP tier

You can delete a VIP tier you no longer need. To delete a tier, your VIP program must first be deactivated. **The entry-level VIP tier can't be deleted.**

  **Important:** Deleting a VIP tier requires you to deactivate your VIP program first. When you reactivate your program, Smile recalculates customer VIP tiers using your updated tier configuration. This may change the VIP tier of existing customers. For more information, see [**Deactivate or reactivate your VIP program**](/en/articles/11801166-deactivate-or-reactivate-vip-program).

1. From **Smile Admin**, navigate to **Program** > [**VIP**](https://app.smile.io/reward-programs/vip).
2. If your VIP program is active, click **Deactivate program**.
3. In the **VIP tiers** section, select the tier you want to delete.
4. Scroll to the bottom of the tier settings page and click **Delete**.
5. In the confirmation dialog, click **Delete tier**.

The tier is permanently deleted and can no longer be assigned to customers.
