# Understand Shopify Flow and Smile

> Use Shopify Flow to automatically award points or adjust a customer's points balance based on events in your store.

Shopify Flow lets you create automated workflows using triggers, conditions, and actions. With Smile's Shopify Flow actions, you can automatically award points or adjust a customer's points balance when events occur in your store.

Smile includes two actions you can use in Shopify Flow:

* **Send Smile activity**
* **Adjust points balance**

## Choose the right action

Smile offers two actions in Shopify Flow. The right choice depends on how you want points to be issued and tracked.

### Send Smile activity

**Send Smile activity** requires setup in Smile Admin and records points as earned points in your analytics.

**Visibility:** Activities configured for **Send Smile activity** appear as earning opportunities in the Smile panel and any other customer-facing loyalty surfaces you've enabled. This lets customers see how they can earn points before completing the action.

Use **Send Smile activity** when:

* You want to award a fixed number of points based on a customer or order trigger.
* You want points to be recorded as earned points in your analytics.
* You're rewarding customers for completing a specific action.

You want customers to see the earning opportunity and receive Smile points-earned email notifications (if enabled).

### Adjust points balance

**Adjust points balance** updates a customer's points balance directly and doesn't require setup in Smile Admin.

**Visibility:** Points awarded through **Adjust points balance** aren't displayed as an earning opportunity in the Smile panel or other customer-facing loyalty surfaces.

Use **Adjust points balance** when:

* You need to issue a dynamic number of points, such as points based on order quantity.
* Your trigger isn't tied to a customer activity configured in Smile.
* You want to issue double points or another multiplier-based reward.
* You need to add or remove points from a customer's balance.
* You don’t need to notify the customer of the points earned with an email or display the earning opportunity for customers.

Unlike **Send Smile activity**, **Adjust points balance** supports formulas and Shopify variables. This makes it useful for dynamic rewards, such as double-points promotions or points based on order quantity.
