Award points on previous purchases

Manually award points for purchases made before launching with Smile.

Updated yesterday

Smile doesn’t automatically award points for purchases made before you installed the app. If you’d like customers to receive points for those past purchases, you can manually add points to their Smile accounts — either individually or in bulk.

ℹ️ Note: This process only distributes points to customer accounts. It does not generate or send discount codes automatically. Customers will still need to redeem their points for a reward in your loyalty program.

Option 1: Manually award points to individual customers

If you only need to award points to a few customers:

  1. In Smile Admin, navigate to Customers.

  2. Search for the customer you want to adjust.

  3. Select the customer.

  4. In the Points card on their profile, click Adjust balance.

  5. Enter the number of points to add.

  6. Add a Reason for adjustment — this is an internal note for your records.

  7. Select Custom description to add a customer-facing note for the adjustment, or leave Default description selected.

  8. Click Adjust points.

This adds points directly to the customer’s Smile account balance — it does not issue a discount code.

Option 2: Import points in bulk

If you want to award points to many customers at once:

  1. Create a CSV file with two columns:

    • email

    • points

  2. In Smile Admin, navigate to Customers.

  3. Click Adjust customers, then select Adjust points totals.

  4. Choose Add points to existing customer balances.

  5. Upload the CSV file.

  6. Enter an internal note in Reason for adjustment.

  7. Click Import points.

After the import, each customer’s Smile account balance will be updated with the points. These points can later be redeemed for rewards, but Smile won’t automatically issue any discount codes during this import.

Tip: To determine the number of points for each customer, pull a Total Spent report from your eCommerce platform. Multiply each customer’s total spent by your program’s points per dollar rate to calculate how many points they should receive.
