Learn how customers earn points when purchasing a gift card or when paying with a gift card.

When a customer purchases or uses a gift card as payment, the points earning behaviour depends on the eCommerce platform you are using. To avoid double points, Smile awards points only once during either the purchase or use of the gift card.

Points earning on Shopify gift cards


When a customer purchases a gift card from your store on Shopify, points are not awarded for the initial purchase of the gift card. Points are awarded to the customer when the gift card is used to make a purchase.

Points earning on BigCommerce gift cards


When a customer purchases a gift card from your store on BigCommerce, points are awarded for the initial purchase of the gift card. Points are not awarded to the customer when the gift card is used to make a purchase.

Points earning with Rise.ai gift cards


When a customer purchases a gift card from your store using Rise.ai, points are awarded for the purchase of the gift card. Points are awarded again when the gift card is used to make a purchase.

⚠️ Warning: Since Rise products aren't coded within Shopify as gift cards, Smile does not have a way to identify them and block them from earning points on both purchases. If you choose to use Rise gift cards with a Smile program, please be aware that customers will earn points on both the purchase and use of the gift card.
