Exclude customers by tag

Exclude a customer group from your program with Shopify Tags or BigCommerce Customer Groups.

Using Shopify Tags or BigCommerce Customer Groups you can remove a group of customers from participating or interacting with your loyalty program. This can be useful for customers you are rewarding in other ways, such as wholesaler discounts.

Exclude customers by Shopify Tag


To exclude customers from your program using Shopify Tags:

  1. In Smile Admin, navigate to Settings > Platform.

  2. In the Exclude customers card, click Edit.

  3. Enter the Shopify customer tag(s) that you wish to exclude.

  4. Click Add.

  5. Click Save.

๐Ÿ’ก Important: Tags are case-sensitive, the tag needs to be entered exactly as it appears in Shopify. For example, if you enter "Wholesale" in Shopify, and "wholesale" in Smile, the tags wonโ€™t match and the customers would not be excluded.


Exclude customers by BigCommerce Customer Group


To exclude customers from your program using BigCommerce Customer Groups:

  1. In Smile Admin, navigate to Settings > Platform.

  2. In the Exclude customers card, click Edit.

  3. Use the dropdown to select the customer group(s) that you wish to exclude.

  4. Click Save.

What to expect when a customer group is excluded


Excluded customers are not notified when they are removed from your loyalty program. This applies to customers who are manually excluded and customers who are excluded by tag.

All behaviors below apply to both types of excluded customers.

Visibility behavior

Always visible

  • The Loyalty Landing Page is always visible to excluded customers.

Visible when not logged in

  • When an excluded customer is not logged into their store account, the Smile launcher, panel, and all embedded Smile UI features are visible.

Hidden when logged in

  • When an excluded customer logs into their store account, the Smile launcher, panel, and all embedded Smile UI features are hidden.

Exception: Loyalty Hub

  • Excluded customers can see the Loyalty Hub.

  • All program content in the Hub is hidden.

  • A message appears letting them know they are not eligible for rewards.

Program access and activity

  • Excluded customers do not earn points.

  • Excluded customers cannot redeem points for rewards.

  • Their referral link becomes inactive and cannot be used.

Customer profile

  • Excluding a customer does not remove their profile from Smile Admin.

  • You can still view their profile.

  • You can add the customer back to your program at any time.
