Configure ways to earn points

Create and edit ways for customers to earn points, and disable or activate earning actions.

Ways to earn allow customers to participate in your rewards program by completing actions to earn points. You can choose which earning actions to offer and set how many points customers earn for each one. After creating a way to earn, you can edit it at any time.

ℹ️ Note: All earning rules only support whole-number point values. Decimal amounts (for example, 0.5 points) cannot be used when setting how many points customers earn.

Create a new way to earn


Creating a new way to earn adds an earning action to your rewards program for customers. To configure a new way to earn:

  1. In Smile Admin, navigate to Program > Points.

  2. Click Add ways to earn.

  3. Select the type of action you’d like to reward for.

  4. In the Earning value card, input the number of points you'd like to offer for this action.

  5. Click Create.

✅ Tip: To maximize effectiveness and reduce fraud risk, you can customize ways to earn with Earning Limits to control how often points can be earned and who can earn them.

Edit an existing way to earn


Ways to earn can be edited or modified at any time. To customize the icon, name, earning value, or other properties of an existing way to earn:

  1. In Smile Admin, navigate to Program > Points.

  2. In the Ways to earn card find the action you'd like to modify, click Edit.

  3. Complete your desired changes.

  4. Click Save.

✅ Tip: To give bonus points during special events or sales periods, setup bonus campaigns instead of editing a way to earn’s earning value.

⚠️ Warning: If a refund or partial refund for a previous order occurs after you have edited the earning value for the Place an order action, a customer’s points will be adjusted (added or subtracted) according the current earning value. Learn more about partial refunds here.

Place an order earning rules


When you set up a Place an order earning action, it follows a fixed structure for awarding points on customer spend.

When setting the earning value:

  • You must enter a whole number of points (for example, 1, 5, or 10 points).

  • Decimal values are not supported (for example, you cannot award 0.5 points).

  • The earning rate is always calculated as points per 1 unit of your store’s currency (for example, points per $1 spent).

  • You cannot change the fixed 1-unit spend amount (for example, “1 point for every $10 spent” is not supported).

To adjust how generous your loyalty program is, you can change:

  • How many points customers earn per 1 unit of currency.

  • How many points are required to redeem a reward.

These settings let you control generosity while keeping the fixed earning structure in place.

Activate or disable a way to earn


When a way to earn is active, customers will see it in the Smile panel and earn points for completing the action.

When a way to earn is disabled, customers will not earn points for completing the action and it will be hidden from the Smile panel.

To change the status of a way to earn:

  1. In Smile Admin, navigate to Program > Points.

  2. In the Ways to earn card find the way to earn you'd like to change, click Edit.

  3. In the Summary card click Active or Disabled.

  4. Click Save.

💡 Important: When a way to earn is changed from active to disabled, any points previously earned from from that action will remain in customer accounts. No additional points will be earned for that action while the way to earn is in a disabled state.
