By default, all customers earn points using the same earning rules. You can create VIP-specific earning rules to give customers in different tiers a different earning rate — for example, a higher points-per-dollar rate for customers in your top tier.
Feature availability: VIP is available on Growth, Plus, and Enterprise plans.

How it works

Each earning rule can be limited to customers in a specific VIP tier. You create one rule per tier, each with its own earning value. When a customer places an order, they earn points from the rule that matches their tier. If you use VIP-specific rules, every tier (including your entry tier) must have its own rule. If a tier doesn’t have a dedicated rule, customers in that tier will fall back to your default earning rule — and if both rules are active, they’ll earn from both.

Create a VIP-specific earning rule

You’ll need to create a separate rule for each tier you want to configure.
  1. From Smile Admin, navigate to Program > Points.
  2. Click Add ways to earn.
  3. Select Place an order.
  4. In the Earning value card, set the points amount for this tier.
  5. In the Customer eligibility card, check the box for Limit to customers based on VIP tiers.
  6. Select Include specific VIP tier and choose the tier from the dropdown.
  7. Click Create.
Repeat these steps for each tier in your VIP program.
Note: The Customer eligibility card only appears if you have a VIP program set up. If you don’t see it, set up your VIP program first.

Exclude a tier from an earning rule

Instead of creating a tier-specific rule, you can exclude specific tiers from an existing earning rule. This is useful if you want most customers on a default rule but want to prevent one or more tiers from being eligible for it. Use Include specific VIP tier when you want a dedicated earning rule for a specific tier. Use Exclude specific VIP tiers when you want multiple tiers to share the same earning rule, except for certain tiers. For example, you might use one earning rule for Bronze and Silver tiers, exclude Gold from that rule, then create a separate earning rule specifically for Gold customers.
  1. From Smile Admin, navigate to Program > Points.
  2. In the Ways to earn card, find the earning rule you want to edit and click Edit.
  3. In the Customer eligibility card, check the box for Limit to customers based on VIP tiers.
  4. Select Exclude specific VIP tiers and choose the tiers from the dropdown.
  5. Click Save.

Important considerations

  • Cover every tier. If you configure VIP-specific earning rules, create one for each tier including your entry tier. Any tier without a dedicated rule will still match your default earning rule. If both rules are active, customers in that tier will earn from both.
  • One tier per rule. Each VIP-specific earning rule (using Include) supports one tier at a time. You must create a separate rule for each tier you want to configure.
  • Bonus points campaigns. Bonus campaigns require exactly one active “Place an order” earning rule. If you have multiple active rules — for example, separate rules for each VIP tier — the bonus campaign creator will be blocked and you won’t be able to launch a campaign. To run a bonus campaign, temporarily deactivate all but one “Place an order” rule. The bonus automatically applies to whichever single rule is active.
